New Literacies

"Many new reading and writing skills are required to successfully and efficiently use this powerful tool for information and communication." Leu, Leu, and Coiro p. 17

Form groups of 3-4. Make a list of the new reading and writing skills, and the dispositions and knowledges, necessary to make use of the Internet for personal, civic, and professional tasks. Be as specific as possible. Spend 20 minutes making this list. Record them into a document on a computer.

For at least 4 of the skills you listed, brainstorm an activity that you could do with your students to help them to develop this skill. Identify at least 3 possible activities per skill. Spend 30 minutes on this task. Record summaries of the activities on a computer.

Be prepared to share your list of skills and the activities for at least 4 of them with the class.
