DVD (Digital Video Disc) is a high capacity CD
(Compact Disk) size disc for video, multimedia, games and audio
applications. Capacities for the
read-only DVD disc range from 4.7GB (Gigabytes) to 17.1GB. The high quality of video and audio has
helped DVD-Video to replace VHS for pre-recorded titles and to increase the
overall video market in most regions. Statistics show that DVD is
growing faster than any other consumer electronics format in the United
States and Europe. Personal computers
with DVD capability are also selling, but multimedia and games applications
of DVD have been slow to start. The
advent of new games consoles using DVD is also helping to stimulate further
sales. DVD-ROM
is a read-only DVD disk used for storing data and interactive sequences as
well as audio and video. DVD-ROMs run
in DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM drives, not DVD-Video players connected to TVs and home
theaters. The
term DVD-ROM is used to define both the physical and logical format of
pre-recorded DVD discs and the computer multimedia applications of DVD. DVD-ROM discs, as opposed to DVD-Video or
DVD-Audio discs, are being used for games, encyclopedias, and other
applications where the larger size is needed. |
